Star pacer Fighter Command is gearing up for a shot at The Eureka, the world’s richest harness race, by taking on the $60,000 Beautide in Hobart. Trainer Jess Tubbs is steering Fighter Command towards this path after missing out on an invitation to the Rising Sun event. The four-year-old, bred and foaled in Tasmania, aims to secure a spot in The Eureka, bypassing the Queensland riches to focus on the Tasmanian route.
Last year, Fighter Command faced a setback just before the TAB Eureka due to a life-threatening condition. With only five races since then, including two wins and two fourth-place finishes, Fighter Command is set to compete in the Nevele R Stud Pace at Melton to inch closer to The Eureka. The upcoming race will pit him against The Narcissist, an unbeaten contender trained by Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin.
While Fighter Command stays south, Tubbs is preparing to send Rakero Rebel to Queensland for the $150,000 Group 1 Golden Girl at Albion Park. Rakero Rebel, a star mare, is expected to challenge the pre-race favorite, Eye Keep Smiling. Better Eclipse is another potential raider from Tubbs’ stable, with a history of strong performances in Queensland, including a victory in the Group 1 Sunshine Sprint in 2022.
Queensland holds a special place for Tubbs, having secured her first Group 1 training success with Momentslikethese in the 2021 Queensland Oaks. The Yabby Dams Trotters’ Free-For-All at Melton is another race to watch, with Arcee Phoenix set to make a comeback after a break. The six-year-old, trained by Chris Svanosio, is aiming to compete for Inter Dominion favoritism alongside star Kiwi pairs Oscar Bonavena and Bet N Win.
As the harness racing season unfolds, the journey of Fighter Command and other contenders showcases the competitive spirit and strategic planning that define the sport. With high stakes and prestigious races on the horizon, trainers like Jess Tubbs navigate the complexities of the racing circuit to position their horses for success.
