Inter Dominion trotting favorite, Keayang Zahara, is likely to miss the upcoming rich series in Brisbane due to her recent performance decline. The four-year-old trotting sensation had an impressive unbeaten streak of 14 wins last season, including seven at Group 1 level. However, her form dipped after a narrow win at Melton followed by a defeat in the Group 1 Macarthur Mile at Menangle.
Co-trainer Paddy Lee expressed concerns about Keayang Zahara’s condition, noting a loss of muscle tone and conditioning since the challenging race at Menangle. Despite the setback, Lee mentioned that the mare would continue light training even if she skips the Brisbane Inter Dominion series.
Keayang Zahara’s absence would be a blow to the Lee and Craven clan, who co-own the talented trotter. The decision on her participation will be finalized soon, with the focus on her well-being and readiness for future races. Lee emphasized the importance of allowing the mare more time to recover and regain her form.
Looking ahead, Lee hinted at the possibility of other runners from their stable competing in the Brisbane Inter Dominion. Last year, Keayang Chucky and Keayang Stuka secured second and third places in the Sydney Inter Dominion final. While Keayang Chucky is currently on a break, decisions regarding Keayang Stuka and Imperial Monarch are pending.
In a surprising turn of events, another top contender, Susan Is Her Name, trained by Emma Stewart, is also facing uncertainties due to setbacks, leaving a void in the Brisbane series. Despite these setbacks, star trotters like Arcee Phoenix, Bet N Win, and Oscar Bonavena are expected to headline the competition, set to commence on July 5 with a $500,000 final on July 19.
Amidst the shifting dynamics in the harness racing scene, the absence of key contenders like Keayang Zahara and Susan Is Her Name adds intrigue to the upcoming Brisbane Inter Dominion series. As trainers and connections navigate the challenges of elite competition, the spotlight now falls on emerging talents and seasoned campaigners vying for supremacy in the prestigious event.
