The Geraldton Turf Club is the first beneficiary of a significant election commitment that will see over $25 million invested in regional racecourses over the next four years. This funding aims to enhance community facilities and events at racing clubs throughout Western Australia, providing a boost to jobs, tourism, and local economies.
Under the State Government’s initiative, a special Royalties for Regions Racing Fund (RRRF) has been established to finance industry projects at various regional thoroughbred and harness racing club venues. The projects will be overseen by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation, and Safety (LGIRS) in collaboration with Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA).
The infrastructure upgrades planned include improvements such as turf replacement, lighting enhancements, fencing, roofing, horse stalls, cameras, and administration offices. Additionally, new facilities will be constructed for female participants, steward and jockey rooms, among other amenities.
The Geraldton Turf Club is currently undergoing works to replace its irrigation system and turf at a cost of $1.3 million, with completion expected by September. This will enable the track to be prepared for the upcoming racing season starting in October 2025.
Several other racing clubs across Western Australia are set to benefit from the RRRF funding, including Albany Harness Racing Club, Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Club, Bunbury Turf Club, and Northam Harness Racing Club, among others. These investments are part of the government’s broader commitment to support and enhance regional racing in the state.
Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia emphasized the importance of regional racing clubs in fostering community cohesion and vibrancy, likening them to local establishments that bring people together. He highlighted the positive impact that the infrastructure upgrades will have on racegoers and industry participants in regional areas.
In addition to the $25.2 million allocated for racecourse upgrades, the State Government has provided financial support to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club, including emergency funding to ensure the continuation of the 2025 season. Furthermore, a grant of $1.5 million has been earmarked for the establishment of the ‘Golden Saddle’ slot race.
Mid West Minister Jackie Jarvis commended the investment in the Geraldton Turf Club, noting the positive implications for the local community and economy. Sandra Carr MLC echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of race days in regional towns and the broader cultural impact of supporting regional racing.
Overall, the ongoing upgrades and investments in regional racecourses underscore the government’s commitment to preserving and enhancing the rich tradition of racing in Western Australia, ensuring that these clubs remain integral parts of their respective communities for years to come.
