The Peachtree Creek Greenway has finally opened, marking the culmination of years of planning and construction. The multi-use path in Brookhaven, Georgia, covers the first mile and is set to expand to an impressive 12 miles along the I-85 corridor, connecting I-285 to the Atlanta Beltline.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by around 200 residents and officials, the excitement was palpable. The inaugural stretch of the greenway, from North Druid Hills Road to Briarwood Road, boasts a 14-foot-wide paved pathway that meanders through lush greenery and over the North Fork Peachtree Creek.
Betsy Eggers, the founder of the Peachtree Creek Greenway nonprofit, expressed her delight at seeing the project come to fruition after more than six years of hard work. The greenway, dubbed a “miracle mile” by Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst, is a testament to the community’s dedication and vision.
With the first leg now open, residents can enjoy walking, jogging, and biking along the scenic route. The greenway not only promotes outdoor recreation but also serves as a vital link for those living and working in the area, providing an alternative mode of transportation.
Brookhaven’s investment of $10 million in hotel-motel tax funds has kickstarted the greenway project, with plans for additional segments to be funded and developed by neighboring municipalities like Atlanta, Chamblee, and Doraville. The collaboration between public and private entities, including Emory University and the Salvation Army, has been crucial in bringing the greenway to life.
Councilman Joe Gebbia hailed the opening of the Peachtree Creek Greenway as a significant milestone that promises to ignite further development and community engagement in the region. The project’s success underscores the power of partnerships and grassroots efforts in enhancing urban infrastructure and connectivity.
As the greenway continues to expand, its impact on the local environment and economy is expected to be substantial. The development of green spaces and recreational amenities not only improves quality of life for residents but also attracts investment and spurs economic growth in the surrounding areas.
With the PATH Foundation overseeing the project and a commitment to maintaining the greenway accessible from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, the Peachtree Creek Greenway sets a new standard for sustainable urban planning and community-centered design. Its completion marks a promising chapter in the ongoing efforts to create vibrant, inclusive spaces for all to enjoy.
