Every month, Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) honors outstanding individuals in the industry with the Owner and Breeder of the Month awards. These accolades are given to those who have achieved success on the track during the respective month. In May, Michelle Caig was recognized as the Breeder of the Month for her horse Abull’s impressive victory at Winton. The win marked a significant milestone for the six-year-old, who secured his first win after seven starts. Despite not being present at the racecourse, Caig expressed her excitement, stating that winning on any track is a thrill for her.
Abull, sired by Raging Bull and out of Chloe Finn, showcased his potential with a more than five-length victory, highlighting Caig’s breeding expertise. With over two decades of experience in breeding horses, Caig has a deep appreciation for colonial stallions like Christian Cullen, emphasizing the importance of strong bloodlines in producing successful racehorses. She fondly remembers Sun Mist, a prolific mare in her breeding program, whose offspring have excelled on the track, including Sonofanearl, Pretty Sunday, and Rosemma.
Reflecting on her journey as a breeder, Caig remains humble about singling out her best horses, likening it to choosing a favorite child. However, she holds a special place in her heart for Leaf Stride, a talented racehorse that captured her affection. Currently, Caig is focusing on breeding from two broodmares, continuing her legacy in the racing industry with strategic matings and careful planning to produce future champions.
On the other hand, Jono Ansley emerged as the Owner of the Month for his success with Double Parked at Alexandra Park. Ansley, a first-time racehorse owner, is part of the Young Wons syndicate, which co-owns the promising four-year-old alongside Philip and Glenys Kennard. The syndicate, led by George Breckon, has enjoyed a string of victories with Double Parked, showcasing Ansley’s enthusiasm for the sport and the thrill of ownership.
Double Parked, a Downbytheseaside progeny, has demonstrated immense potential on the track, winning three races out of 12 starts under the guidance of trainer Tony Herlihy. Ansley expressed his gratitude for the syndicate’s support and the exhilarating journey from purchasing the horse to celebrating victories in the winners’ lounge. His positive experience as a racehorse owner has fueled his passion for the sport, hinting at future endeavors in ownership.
As the harness racing community celebrates the achievements of individuals like Caig and Ansley, their stories exemplify the dedication, passion, and thrill that define the sport. These monthly awards not only recognize excellence but also inspire others to pursue their dreams in the dynamic world of harness racing.
