James Herbertson, a Lexton reinsman, emerged victorious at the 2024 Noel Smith Memorial held at Horsham Harness Racing Club. His triumph marked a stellar year in the sulky, clinching the Horsham’s Decron Noel Smith Memorial and eventually claiming the prestigious Australian Drivers Premiership with an impressive total of 370 wins, a significant lead over the runner-up, Pete McMullen of Queensland.
Unfortunately, Herbertson will not be present to defend his Horsham title due to an overseas working holiday. His absence, coupled with the absence of the late Greg Sugars, has created opportunities for both young talents and seasoned veterans in the harness racing scene.
The Horsham Harness Racing Club is set to host the 35th edition of the esteemed Decron Noel Smith Memorial Invitation Drivers Championship. Noel Smith, a revered figure in the club’s history, was recognized for his dedicated service to the Victorian harness racing industry, receiving a Distinguished Service Medal from Harness Racing Victoria for his contributions.
The club’s chief executive, Jo Cross, explained that the event invites top drivers based on the previous season’s metropolitan premiership standings. Notable drivers such as Herbertson, David Moran, Kate Gath, and the late Greg Sugars will be absent, paving the way for a competitive field of invitees.
Among the 10 invitees are Chris Alford, Jackie Barker, Glen Craven, Matt Craven, Jason Lee, Jack Laugher, Jordan Leedham, Kerryn Manning, Michael Stanley, and Chris Svanosio. These drivers will compete in five races at Horsham, with horses randomly assigned to each participant.
This year also marks the 15th Industry Participants Appreciation Day, where the club honors the owners, trainers, drivers, and stablehands whose dedication sustains the racing community. The event will feature various lucky draws and giveaways as a token of gratitude for their unwavering support.
The harness racing action will commence with an eight-event card starting at noon, offering free entry through the West Side Bistro or Sports Bar for spectators to enjoy the thrilling races. The day promises excitement and competition as the drivers showcase their skills on the track.
As the racing community gathers at Horsham Harness Racing Club for this prestigious event, the legacy of Noel Smith and the spirit of harness racing live on, shaping the future of the sport and celebrating the talents of both established drivers and rising stars.
