A milestone achievement in Australian harness racing history quietly unfolded as Familiar Tricks crossed the finish line in record time at a Menangle midweek event in April. The victory marked the 100th 2:00 trotter descending from the renowned matron Maori Miss, a legacy that traces back to the iconic Maori’s Idol.
Maori’s Idol made history in 1977 by becoming the first trotter in the southern hemisphere to clock a 2:00 race mile, setting a new standard in the sport. The lineage continued with Maori Time, the current Australasian mile record holder, showcasing the enduring legacy of Maori Miss, a three-time Australian Broodmare of the Year.
According to trotting historian John Peck, Maori Miss’s descendants have excelled on the racing scene, with notable achievements including multiple victories in prestigious races like the Victoria Derbies, Victoria Oaks, Vicbred Finals, Breeders Crowns, and Inter Dominion Trotting Championships.
The Maori Miss family has produced exceptional racemares and colts, with names like Maori Time, Keayang Zahara, and Maori’s Idol etching their names in harness racing history as Group 1 winners.
On a different note, the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship heats at Albion Park saw Captaintreacherous leading the pack with seven runners, while Majestic Son dominated the trotting section with five contenders vying for glory.
At the Bendigo midweek meeting, two-year-old trotting filly Hallebesofine claimed her first victory, a testament to the breeding prowess of Dr. Kath McIntosh of Llowalong Farms, who stands as the breeder of the promising filly sired by Pastor Stephen.
Meanwhile, siblings Ruby Wingate and Iamawingate, bred and raced by the Stephens family, showcased their talent by securing wins on the same card at Shepparton, adding to the excitement and competitiveness in the harness racing circuit.
These recent achievements underscore the enduring legacy and ongoing success stories within the Australian harness racing community, highlighting the talent, dedication, and passion that drive this beloved sport forward.
