Australia’s powerhouse stable, Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin, are set to dominate the country’s richest juvenile race with three key contenders confirmed for the $500,000 Ladbrokes Protostar at Albion Park on July 12. Last year’s second-place finish has fueled their determination to clinch the top spot this time.
Leviathan owner Danny Zavitsanos, along with his wife Jo, secured slots for Cardigan Dan, Dynamitedan, and Loucasso in the prestigious race. Their strategic entries underscore their commitment to big slot races and the quality of their young horses.
Cardigan Dan, the winner of the qualifying race at Ballarat, earned a slot alongside stablemate Loucasso, a four-time winner including the $150,000 Australian Pacing Gold final at Melton. Dynamitedan’s victory in the final of the NSW leg of the Australian Gold series at Menangle solidified his place in the Protostar lineup.
Champion driver Luke McCarthy’s glowing appraisal of Dynamitedan after his recent win convinced the Zavitsanos to target the Protostar with the promising colt. The confirmation of these three runners from the Stewart and Tonkin stable highlights the fierce competition and depth in this year’s Protostar field.
Among the contenders, Premier Queensland trainer Grant Dixon will field Fight For Glory and Fire And Passion, while unbeaten Victorian juvenile Showmethetanlines and Brad Hewitt’s Rewatch, a strong Bathurst Gold Crown performer, will also vie for the top honors.
Additionally, the Kiwi-bred Atua Magic, trained by Shane Sanderson in Victoria, has secured a slot in the race, showcasing the diverse talent and competition set to unfold at the Protostar event.
The anticipation surrounding this year’s Protostar is palpable, with top stables and talented horses converging for a shot at glory in one of harness racing’s most prestigious events. As the countdown to race day begins, fans and enthusiasts eagerly await the thrilling showdown that will unfold at Albion Park on July 12.
